Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
